Dr. Vinson will leave the Department of Dairy Science in late October to become the Associate Dean of Research at West Virginia University. Dr. Vinson has been department head since taking over from Dr. John White in 1986. Before that he was a faculty member in the department since 1971. He came to Virginia Tech from Iowa State University where he received his Ph.D. in Animal Genetics. He received his M.S. and B.S. from North Carolina State University. Dr. Vinson has guided the department in a time of unique stability giving guidance and encouragement as programs matured. One of his most lasting legacies will be the new Dairy Center that will be constructed in the coming year. Without his involvement and the support of the Virginia dairy industry and the Virginia State Dairyman's Association this would not have been possible. Although he was department head he also has taught two courses (Introduction to Dairy Science and Senior Seminar). He has always felt that the most important things we did were in the classroom, laboratory, and farm. He felt all other things should work to support this effort. He strived to ensure this was the case in Dairy Science. His logical approach to solving problems will certainly be missed. The faculty, staff, and students in Dairy Science wish Bill the best as he undertakes a new challenge.
