Correction for the January 2001 Livestock Update Article On PayleanTM (Ractopamine) Use in Youth Market Hogs

Livestock Update, February 2001

Allen Harper, Extension Animal Scientist, Swine, Tidewater AREC

Due to an unfortunate miscommunication, a significant error occurred in the January 2001 article entitled PayleanTM (Ractopamine) and 4H = FFA Youth Swine Projects. The article indicated that, based on communication with a feed ingredient supplier, Paylean-9TM containing 9 grams of ractopamine activity per pound would cost approximately $1.09 per pound of product. This price is incorrect. The actual price of Paylean-9TM is approximately $24.00 to $26.00 per pound of product. Therefore, supplementing a swine finisher diet with 9 grams of ractopamine activity per ton of feed would increase feed cost approximately $25.00 per ton of finished feed.

The author regrets any confusion this error may have caused. All other information in the article is accurate.
