VA Beef Expo Commercial Heifer Sale Will Feature VA Premium Assured Cow/Calf Pairs
Livestock Update, March 2003
John B. Hall, Extension Animal Scientist, Beef, VA Tech
The Commercial Heifer Sale at the VA Beef Expo will sell only Virginia Premium Assured Heifers again in 2003. As a special feature, a few select lots have been reserved for VA Premium Assured Heifer (VAPAH) Cow/Calf Pairs. These will be young cows that were purchased or raised as VAPAH commercial cows and their calves. The VAPAH program has been going strong for four years. The VA Beef Expo Commercial Heifer Sale Committee decided to offer cow/calf pairs for the first time in 2003. "We felt like it was time people had an opportunity to see the kind of cows VA Premium Assured Heifers become and the quality of their calves", said Carl Lindgren, Chair of the Expo Commercial Heifer Sale Committee.
The sale committee anticipates 150 commercial heifers in this year's sale. Heifers will be sold in lots of 3 to 5 by consignor. Each year the heifers featured in the VA Beef Expo Commercial Heifer Sale are from some of the top commercial heifer breeders in the state. The breeding programs of these consignors are focused on producing commercial replacement heifers as a principal product.
The Commercial Heifer Sale will begin at 2:00 on April 19 at the Rockingham County Fair Grounds. Anyone needing additional information on the sale or consignments, please contact Bill McKinnon, Expo Manager, at 540-992-1009. Persons desiring more information on VA Premium Assured Heifers should contact John B. Hall, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, at 540-231-9153 or jbhall@vt.edu.
