2006 Virginia BCIA Southwest Bull Test Sale Report

The Annual Southwest Virginia Performance Tested Bull Sale sponsored by the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association was held Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Wytheville. The 129 bulls sold established a new record for the Southwest Bull Sale, commanding an average sale price of $2685 per head. Breed averages were as follows: 93 Angus averaged $2742, 20 Simmental and SimAngus averaged $3287, 10 Charolais at $1235, and 6 Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh Balancers averaged $2208.
High-selling bull of the sale was a SimAngus bull, Lot 402, bred by Hounshell Farms of Wytheville, VA and selling to Select Sires for $8750. This October, 2004 son of GAR Pinnacle posted a BW EPD +0.6, YW EPD +77, and MB EPD +0.26 along with ultrasound IMF and REA ratios of 150 and 110, respectively. Demand was strong for the fall-born SimAngus bulls, with another Hounshell Farms consignment, Lot 401, selling to William Kegley of Pulaski, VA for $3600. This bull was sired by GAR Predestined and had a BW EPD of +0.2, YW EPD +69, and IMF ratio 130. Another SimAngus, Lot 407 bred by J&M Windy Acres of Maryville, TN, also brought $3600 and went to Malcolm Boothe of Dublin, VA. This son of GAR Grid Maker had a test ADG of 4.64, ratio 107, along with BW EPD of +0.2, and YW EPD +97. The high-selling Junior Simmental was Lot 432 from Jess-A-Marr Farms of Wytheville, VA and sold to Alan Spivey of Aroda, VA for $3800. This homozygous black, purebred son of GW Lucky Dice 187H was the high YW junior Simmental at 1407 pounds, ratio 119, and had a YW EPD of +72 and REA EPD +0.32.
A strong Angus bull sale was led by Lot 13, consigned by Red Oak Farm of Bland, VA, selling to Mountain Meadow Farms of Sparta, NC for $7000. This October, 2004 son of WAR Alliance 9126 6006 had a test ADG of 4.96, ratio 127, along with CE EPD +10 and YW EPD +99. Lot 59 from Four Locust Angus in Keysville, VA sold to Robert Meyers of Galax, VA for $5500 for two-thirds semen interest and full possession. This calving-ease son of Bon View New Design 1407 posted an adjusted yearling weight of 1378 pounds, ratio 115, with a BW EPD +0.2, YW EPD +97, IMF EPD +0.27 and REA EPD +0.56. Echo Ridge Farm of Atkins, VA bred the high-selling Junior Angus, Lot 95, selling two-thirds semen interest and full possession to Jason Semones of Hillsville, VA for $5100. This son of Rito 1I2 of 2536 Rito 6I6 had test YW and ADG ratios of 111 and 115, along with YW EPD +95 and ultrasound ratios of 125 and 117 for IMF and REA. Lot 30, a son of Bon View New Design 878 consigned by Baird Angus of Bluff City, TN was the high-indexing Senior Angus and sold to Dale McBride of Morgantown, WV for $5000. He achieved a test YW of 1368 pounds, ratio 114, test ADG 4.73, ratio 121, along with CE EPD +10 and YW EPD + 85. Another calving-ease son of Bon View New Design 1407, Lot 4, consigned by Justafew Angus of Max Meadows, VA sold to C and R Gent Farm of Honaker, VA for $4800. He posted a CE EPD +10, YW EPD +87, $B +43 and test ADG ratio 112. Another Echo Ridge Farm bull, Lot 97, also a calving-ease son of Bon View New Design 1407 went to William St. John of Chilhowie, VA for $4700.
The high-indexing Junior Gelbvieh was Lot 604 from Little Windy Hill Farms of Max Meadows, VA and sold to Robert Theimer of Fincastle, VA for $3300. This February, 2005 son of JOB Danell Montana Proud 35 had a test YW of 1314 pounds, ratio 114, test ADG ratio 109 and YW EPD +86. Another Little Windy Hill Farms consignment, Lot 603, sold to Jerry Hood of Winchester, TN for $3050. This homozygous black, homozygous polled bull was also sired by JOB Danell Montana Proud 35 and had an adjusted YW of 1342 pounds, and posted ultrasound ratios of 161 and 108 for IMF and REA, respectively.
Lot 304 from FBG II Farms of Abingdon, VA led the Charolais sale going to William St. John of Chilhowie, VA for $1800. This November, 2004 son of JWK Activate G201 had a test ADG of 4.38, ratio 112, along with BW EPD -1.2 and YW EPD +50.
All bulls in the test and sale were consigned by members of the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Bulls were tested at Hillwinds Farm at Dublin, VA owned and operated by Tim Sutphin. The sale was managed by Virginia BCIA and the Virginia Cattlemen's Association, and the auctioneer was Mike Jones.
