2007 Fall Events at the MARE Center, Middleburg, VA

Livestock Update, September 2007

16th Annual Thoroughbred Yearling Auction, Sunday, October 14, 2007
The MARE Center raises yearlings as a vital part of its research efforts to better understand the relationships between nutrition and healthy development in the growing horse, improved reproduction in the mare, and optimal performance in the athletic horse.  As we approach our 16th Annual Thoroughbred Yearling Auction we once again will be offering for sale these exceptional horses.  All proceeds go directly to the MARE Center to continue research and breeding programs.

Six stallions are represented in this year’s yearlings: BALL’S BLUFF, FRED ASTAIRE, KATAHDIN MEADOW MONSTER, WAYNE COUNTY, and YARROW BRAE.  Previous yearlings sold at our auction have matured to show, hunt, and race both on the flat and over fences. In particular on the race track our progeny have earned over $2,000,000.  These animals have proven their versatility, whether by selection for speed or for sporting ability.

3rd Annual Equine Nutrition and Health Seminar, Friday, October 19, 2007
Horse owners and equine enthusiasts are invited to attend an educational seminar on Managing Healthy Growth and Development in Young Horses on Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Middleburg, VA (MARE Center, Fauquier County).  Registration will begin at 8:30 am, with the program running from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and including lunch.  The event is coordinated by Virginia Cooperative Extension and the MARE Center with additional support from the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition and the Virginia Horse Industry Board.

This program is being offered to anyone with an interest in horse breeding management or horse growth and includes a selection of topics relevant to the horse owner or breeder.  Invited speakers from Pennsylvania State University and Virginia Intermont will join representatives of Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension in discussing appropriate feeding and exercise of young horses, as well as methods for monitoring growth and development.

The cost of this event is $25.00.  To ensure adequate meal and handout arrangements, pre-registration by October 12, 2007 is requested.  Please pre-register by contacting Shea Porr at 540-687-3521 ext 27/cporr@vt.edu or Rita Rollison at 540-687-3521 ext 10/rbrady@vt.edu.
