Livestock Update, October 1997

Ike Eller, Animal and Poultry Sciences, Virginia Tech

There will be an Open House program at the VA BCIA Culpeper test station at Glenmary Farm near Rapidan, Virginia on Sunday afternoon, November 9th from 1:30 to 5:00 pm. The public is invited to an unstructured Open House to visit and view the 126 senior age bulls on test at the 40 year old Culpeper central bull test at Glenmary Farm, operated by Tom & Kim Nixon and his mother, Mrs. Robert Nixon.

In this year's group of senior bulls calved September 1 to December 15, 1996, there are 126 bulls on 112 day test. They include 111 Angus, 9 Simmental, 4 Polled Hereford and 2 Charolais. These bulls are due to complete their gain test November 25th and the top performing two-thirds will be sold at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises near Culpeper on Saturday, December 13th at 12:00 noon.

Glenmary Farm is located just off state route 522, 10 miles south of Culpeper, just south of the river and the Orange County line. Turn west or up the river on route 136, two miles and turn into the left to the test station.

For additional information on the Open House call Tom Nixon, 540/854-6994 or Orange County extension agent Steve Hopkins, 540/672-1361 or the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association at Blacksburg, 540/231-9163.

No reservations are necessary. Light refreshments will be served. Beef cattle producers and the general public are cordially invited to attend the Open House.
